What woods to avoid?
Some woods contribute to deforestation, habitat destruction,
or come from poorly managed forests and often include
hardwoods such as Non-Certified Mahogany, Rosewood,
Ebony, and Wenge. These woods are often illegally harvested
due to their high value and durability.
Are there any alternatives?
Using salvaged or repurposed wood – the not-so-technical term
is reclaimed wood – prevents the need for new trees to be cut
down. Another eco-friendly option is to opt for Engineered Wood
(Plywood, MDF, Particleboard). These can be more sustainable
if sourced from certified suppliers, but avoid options with
formaldehyde-based adhesives.
