WOODN’T

RIGHT
W
ith more and more corporates
and clients paying attention to
sustainability credentials, it’s not only a
good look, but a way towards more business.
But all “sustainable” materials and fabrics
are not created equal, especially when it
comes to wood and chopping down trees.
We’re taking a look at what you should look
out for when selecting wood-based furniture.
Firstly, what is sustainable wood?
Sustainability is
our responsibility.
Sustainable wood is timber that is harvested
and used to make furniture without
damaging the environment. While that
may seem like an oxymoron, sustainable
wood comes from forests that are managed
responsibly, and the trees are replanted after
harvesting. Wood is a renewable resource,
as long as it is managed properly and the
forests are given time to recover.
There are official bodies in the EU that
monitor the use of forested wood, ensuring
that what ends up as our tables and chairs,
are as sustainable as it gets. The Forest
Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme
for the Endorsement of Forest Certification
(PEFC) are the main certifications ensuring
wood comes from sustainably managed
forests. The EU Timber Regulation (EUTR)
prevents illegally harvested wood from
entering the European market.
What are eco-friendly
woods?
Generally speaking, eco-friendly woods are
from fast growing trees – trees that take
around 10 years to mature. Of course, these
trees need to be responsibly planted and
harvested too, keeping in mind the habitat of
other naturally occurring trees in the area.
