MESSAGE FROM THE A-TEAM
for centuries and many reasons, – as
a filling material in wooden huts, as
an ingredient in soups & desserts
and as decoration. It is also used in
the creation of dyes,
in the manufacturing
of litmus paper, and
is the primary lichen
used for miniature
trees in architecture
and railway modelling.
The highly porous
structure allows
for an exceptional
sound absorption
ability across a wide
frequency range.
In 2014, the founders
of Nordgröna, then
students at Lund
University in Sweden,
discovered the
lichen’s outstanding
ability to absorb
sound. Oscar and
twin brothers, Joris
& Sander, have been
obsessed with the
R&D of moss as a
natural, sustainable
and regrowing
material for modern
living and working
spaces ever since. Nordgröna’s first
product was installed 2014 at a local
coffeehouse. Since then, customers
have included BMW, Apple, Porsche,
Google, IKEA, and more.
Just like it’s larger cousins Convex
and Canopy, Pixel is made from
naturally grown, hand picked
Scandinavian reindeer moss which
reduces noise very effectively. Natural
reindeer moss has ideal properties for
absorbing sound. The highly porous
structure allows for an exceptional
sound absorption ability across a
wide frequency range. The material
constitutes an alternative to synthetic
options while simultaneously offering
an industry leading performance.
Only 5 by 5 centimeters (roughly
2 inches) per unit, Pixel lets
loose the creative in you; allowing
you to combine Pixels into large
mesmerizing patterns, turn corridors
into magical portals – or just tuck cool
colours into nooks and crannies.
This naturally grown material
stays fluffy by regulating its own
humidity year-round and requires no
maintenance at all – no watering, no
trimming, no sunlight.
Keeping it sustainable is important,
which is why Nordgröna follows strict
rules in terms of environment and
sustainability across an area of about
5.000 km² (5800 mi²).
To allow for the best possible
regrowth, and to not disturb these
little microcosms too much, the lichen
is picked in a checkerboard pattern,
and only from parts above a specified
length in order to allow for the best
possible conditions for regrowth. No
more than 20% of the amount is
picked at a time, and the area is not
revisited again for at least 4-5 years.
The lichen grows the fastest during
the spring period, and is not collected
during the winter period during which
the ground is covered in snow.
Picking lichen also requires a
governmental permit and approval of
landowners. The collection of lichen
maintains employment for rural
communities, and is a requirement in
some forest areas where overgrowth
of the lichen inhibits propagation of
plants and animals. The picking of
the lichen is subject to a rigorous
review (ISO 9001) conducted every
3 years and encompasses all
company activities.
